The two-volume 1258 page book includes over 6,000 full color photographs of 890 species, along with a description of its shell, habitat, ecology, and fossil occurrences when available. It includes over 5,000 complete bibliographic references on the Bivalvia. There are 16 new species described, along with three new genera. This effort was led by Dr. Eugene V. Coan and Paul Valentich-Scott of the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History. The publication is available directly from the Santa Barbara Museum.
