The School is based within the Faculty of Science and Health and holds strong teaching and research links with many collaborators from within academia, industry and the public sector.  The successful applicant will be passionate about education, research and innovation and be able to effectively articulate their contribution to delivering high quality services.  You will join our existing team delivering first class education to students in the School.

We are seeking applicants with expertise in palaeontology, particularly in the areas of paleoclimatology and/or paleoenvironmental analysis, and at least one of the other following areas: micropalaeontology, Cenozoic palaeontology, stable isotopes, carbonate sedimentology.

The post holder will be required to design and deliver first class teaching (including fieldwork) and pastoral support to our students in addition to undertaking research and/or innovation activities at a level commensurate to their role. Their teaching contribution will draw upon their specialist expertise as well as contributing to the broad coverage of provision across our courses.

two-year Research Fellowship (postdoctoral) in paleobiology

 Applications are invited for a two-year Research Fellowship (postdoctoral) in paleobiology relating to the goals of the Deep Time Initiative at the National Museum of Natural History.  This fellowship involves 75% time commitment to research and 25% time commitment toward advancing science education and outreach for the public. The appointment provides stipend ($55,000/yr), research/travel allowance ($4K/yr), support for health insurance ($5K/yr), and a one-time relocation allowance ($1K).

The successful applicant will be expected to conduct independent research in paleobiology, take part in various scholarly activities of the museum, and become involved in public outreach and education focused on enhancing visitor experiences in our Deep Time exhibit.  Research in any aspect of paleobiology will be considered, however, priority will be given to applications that: 1) propose innovative research on a collections-based, exciting topic in paleobiology, 2) indicate a high standard of research productivity, creativity, and interactivity, 3) show experience in communicating about a broad range of science topics with the public through a variety of media.

The Deep Time (DT) initiative is focused on understanding connections between 4.6 billion years of environmental change, the diversity of life, and the future of our species on Earth. The four focal themes are: 1) evolution of organisms, 2) evolution of ecosystems, 3) earth processes, 4) connections among these and our human past, present and future.  The Deep Time Initiative seeks to inform and inspire the global community about the importance of fossils and the history of life, and to help educate citizens for a changing planet.  The Deep Time Peter Buck Fellow will join a diverse intellectual community at NMNH, which includes two other Deep Time Peter Buck Fellows as well as other Smithsonian Fellows involved in research, education, and outreach activities relating to the Deep Time exhibition (opened in June, 2019).  

Preferred starting dates for the fellowship are between September 1 and October 31, 2021, and all formal requirements for a Ph.D. must be completed before the end of this time interval. The Field Museum invites applications for an Assistant Curator in the
fields of Invertebrate Paleontology or Paleobotany. This term position
has a probationary period of 3 + 3 years; after successful promotion to
the Associate level it is renewable every 7 years, according to the
Field Museum’s Policy Statement on the Curatorial Ranks. The start date
for the position is on or after January 1, 2022.

The Field Museum's Geology Section has a record of scientific excellence
in collections-based research, with current strengths in phylogenetic
systematics, functional morphology, paleoecology, macroevolution,
history and philosophy of biology, meteoritics, and cosmochemistry. Our
Fossil Invertebrate and Paleobotany collections are world class. The
Fossil Invertebrate collection is focused on the Paleozoic of the
Midwest with significant collections of the Pennsylvanian Mazon Creek
Lagerstätte, Devonian fossils from the Falls of the Ohio area, Silurian
reef fossils from the Chicago area, and Paleozoic echinoderms. The
Paleobotany Collection contains significant holdings of Late
Carboniferous fossil plants preserved as compression-adpressions,
permineralized peats, and within sideritic concretions. Cretaceous
through Paleogene floras are well-represented, including angiosperm
mesofossil assemblages from the Upper Cretaceous Raritan and Magothy
Formations. Substantial fossil palynological collections and comparative
extant pollen and spore preparations are also housed within the
Collection.

We are seeking a collegial individual with strong communication skills
who conducts innovative, integrative research that will complement and
broaden the section’s strengths. The successful candidate will be
expected:

 * to maintain an externally funded field and/or laboratory research
   program,
 * to contribute to building and using the Invertebrate Paleontology or
   Paleobotany collections, and
 * to participate in Museum exhibition, public outreach and education,
   and programmatic efforts.

Project description:

Throughout Paleozoic and Mesozoic stem- and crown-tetrapods, the skull morphology is remarkably divergent and extreme skull modifications (characterized by a frequent losses of bony elements), are observed among the different groups. The extreme end to this trend is exemplified in modern lissamphibians, in which only 19 out of the original 43 dermal skull elements of their early tetrapod ancestors are retained. In the present project, the skull morphology of a broad selection of early tetrapod and lissamphibians that are adapted to different lifestyles will be investigated to detect how and specifically why dermal bones are lost repeatedly and if this pattern evolved convergently in the different lineages of early tetrapods.

Responsibilities:

• Scientific research in the DFG funded project: “Evolutionary simplification of the dermatocranium in early tetrapods”
• Morphological examination of the dermal skull bones of numerous early tetrapods and lissamphibians in terms of shape variation (geometric morphometrics)
  
• Production of thin-sections of early tetrapods specimens (paleohistology)
  
• Examination of the extension and location of the jaw muscles in early tetrapods
  
• Publication of scientific results in peer-reviewed journals
  
• Attending and participating in international conferences
  

The project associated with this position will fulfill the requirements of a doctoral degree.

Requirements:

• Master’s (or comparable) degree in Biology or Paleontology
• Profound knowledge of early tetrapods and lissamphibians
• Basic knowledge of morphological (geometric morphometrics) and/or histological (paleohistology) methods are desirable
• Willingness to undertake national and international business trips
• Very good English language skills (written and spoken)
• Ability to work in a team, reliability and self-sufficiency

Se busca candidado/a altamente motivado/a para la realización de una
Tesis Doctoral sobre grandes eventos climáticos del pasado, y sus
consecuencias bióticas y ambientales. Se estudiarán microfósiles
(foraminíferos) de localidades de distribución global, especialmente en
regiones poco exploradas como Zelandia, el continente sumergido, como
piezas clave que contribuirán al debate de cómo las emisiones de gases
invernadero afectan al cambio climático actual y futuro, y su
repercusión sobre la vida y el medio ambiente.

 Opportunities for Students: Co-evolution of Earth and life across the Proterozoic-Phanerozoic transition: Integrated perspectives from outcrop and drill core

Funded by NSF-FRES (National Science Foundation Frontier Research in Earth Sciences Program), this collaborative project offers multiple PhD graduate research assistantships to support research on the co-evolution of Earth and life across the Proterozoic-Phanerozoic transition through the integration of geochemical, paleontological, stratigraphic, sedimentological, geochronological, and paleogeographical data from both outcrops and drill cores. Graduate students working on this project will have opportunities to participate in field work in NW Canada, Mongolia, Namibia, and Morocco; to analyze drill cores from South China, Brazil, and Namibia; to study stable isotope geochemistry; and to learn numerical modeling techniques. Students will also have opportunities to interact scientists from eight research groups at six institutions (see PIs list below) as well as the ICDP GRIND-ECT project (https://www.icdp-online.org/projects/world/global-coverage/grind-ect/).
