1) Head of the Department of Palaeobiology, Swedish Museum of Natural History

The Department of Palaeobiology was formed in March 2013 after the merger of the former departments of Palaeobotany and Palaeozoology. The department has extensive and valuable scientific collections in all areas of palaeontology and conducts world leading research in several fields, with emphasis on the origin and development of Cenozoic vertebrates, Palaeozoic invertebrates and seed-plants. Approximately twenty-five people work in the department. We are seeking a dynamic academic leader with experience in collections-based palaeobiology. The candidate has the ability to develop the department´s strengths in world-class, innovative research, collections management, and promotion of palaeontology to the broader public.

Duties
The position involves comprehensive planning and management, including personnel, budgetary and work environment responsibilities. Duties also include participation in management and development of the research sector within the museum, including participation in the steering committee, and implementing actions in priority areas of the museum´s operations. Emphasis will be given to consolidating and developing the new department´s operations. In addition to the managerial responsibilities, the position also provides opportunities within designated work time for the candidate´s own original research or other duties within palaeobiology.

Qualifications
You preferably have previous experience of staff and managerial duties. You must have extensive experience in collections-based work in palaeobiology. You preferably have a PhD in palaeobiology and evidence of scientific productivity at a high international level. Documented ability to obtain external research funding is meritorious, as is experience in conservation and public promotion of fossil collections of a diverse nature. You must be creative and dynamic and have good interpersonal skills. The ability to work in team is essential.

The Swedish Museum of Natural History can promote an employee to professor if she/he is found to have the required qualifications after an evaluation by external reviewers. The successful applicant may apply for such evaluation. The administrative language is Swedish and the candidate must have achieved
documented skills in speaking and reading Swedish within two years. Most current departmental heads within the Swedish Museum of Natural History are men; we encourage female candidates.

2) Researcher in Palaeobiology

Duties
Carry out independent collections-based research at a high international level in the fields of palaeozoology or pre-quaternary palaeobotany, including obtaining external research funding, publishing in leading international journals, presenting research results at international and domestic conferences, etc. The position also includes shared responsibility for documentation and digitalization, supervision of visitors, and dissemination of scientific knowledge to the public and schools. Also, when required, teaching student groups, supervising research students and mentoring postdoctoral researchers, and participating in other activities of the museum and department.

Qualifications
A PhD or equivalent in palaeontology is required. The successful applicant will be creative and dynamic with documented postdoctoral scientific production at a high international level. Ability to work in a team is essential, and the skills or experience to contribute to the administration and development of the research discipline are advantageous. Documented ability to obtain external research funding is meritorious, as is experience in management, practical enhancement, conservation and public promotion of fossil collections of a diverse nature.

This is an open search. Position and salary will be commensurate with the qualifications of the successful applicant.
