Position of director of the National Research Centre on Human Evolution (CENIEH)

CALL TO COVER THE POSITION OF DIRECTOR OF THE NATIONAL RESEARCH CENTRE ON HUMAN EVOLUTION (CENIEH)

Object of the Call
A selection process to cover the position of Director of the National Research Centre on Human Evolution (Centro Nacional de Investigación sobre la Evolución Humana, CENIEH) is called in virtue of the agreement adopted by its Governing Council the 16th January 2017.
The selection process will be openly managed, according to the requirements and steps explained as follows, and respecting, in any case, the principles of capacity, merit, publicity and competition.
The duration of the contract will be temporary, for a period of four years, although it could be extended in consecutive two-year periods.

Job description
The Director will work for the promotion of the CENIEH’s Strategic Plan, for the consecution of its strategic objectives:
O1:        To promote excellence
O2:        To meet the criteria required for the ICTS (Unique Scientific and Technical Infrastructures)
O3:        To set up an open infrastructure to the scientific, technological and industrial community
O4:        To boost and promote the reception of palaeontological collections, mainly those coming from Atapuerca site
O5:        To establish a management system of resources to guarantee the efficiency, transparency and responsibility
O6:        To strengthen the international visibility of CENIEH
O7:        To increase the visibility of CENIEH through a distinctive communication strategy
O8:        To improve the scientific and technological results
O9:        To achieve the necessary funding to face the objectives of CENIEH
The Director will perform the responsibilities described in the Statutes of the Consortium (article 15), to obtain the maximum achievement of its aims (article 3). His/her functions will be, among others:
  • To direct and administrate the Center, as well as safeguard its scientific excellence
  • To contract the work, service and supply projects up to the maximum amount authorized by the Government Council, as well as to follow up their execution
  • To prepare the documentation of the matters which must be presented to the Governing Council and the Executive Board for their consideration, and to report all what is necessary for the correct execution of their competencies
  • To follow up the actions executed at CENIEH
  • The selection, contracting and direction of CENIEH’s personnel, taking into consideration the guidelines set out by the Governing Council, the Executive Board and the compliance of the objectives fixed in CENIEH’s action plans
  • To propose, for approval by the Executive Board, the scientific program, by previously seeking the opinion of the Scientific Advisory Committee
  • To ask for the opinion of the advisory bodies in the cases stated in articles 16 and 17, as well as in every other one which he/she considers appropriate
  • The management, custody and conservation of the patrimony defined in article 19 of the Statutes
  • The management of CENIEH financial resources, ordering and executing expenses, and contracting obligations in accordance with the approved budget
  • The exercise before courts of any kind of judicial actions
  • To arrange and sign the agreements and commitments necessary for the running of CENIEH, within the frame determined by the Governing Council
  • To develop and present to the Executive Board the draft of CENIEH annual budget, the report over the annual accounts and the proposal for the liquidation of the past budget
  • To develop and present to the Executive Board the draft Annual Action Plan
  • To develop the draft of the Annual Report
  • To execute the agreements undertaken by the Governing Council and the Executive Board
  • To authorize the access requests, based on the proposal of the Access Committee
  • Any other powers delegated by the Governing Council or the Executive Board
The Director will be hired or temporally assigned with an exclusive and full-time dedication to CENIEH. His/her role as Director of CENIEH will be incompatible with other professional activities in the private or public sector.

Desired skills and experience


Candidate’s Requirements
Senior scientist with a remarkable career in CENIEH’s areas of interest.
It will be valued:
  • Experience in the direction of, management of and participation at competitive national and international projects
  • Experience in the direction of research centers or institutions, or large research infrastructures
Selection process:
  • Assessment and evaluation of the candidates’ CV and descriptive report 
  • Personal interview with the candidates (in Spanish or in English)
The place, date and hour of the interview will be notified in writing to the candidates.

Selection Commission, appointment and starting date
Under the agreement of the Governing Council on the 16th January 2017, the selection process will be carried out by a Selection Commission which. Once concluded, an appointment proposal (based on a motivated report) will be raised to the Governing Council so that it will carry out the appointment stating the starting date.
The Selection Commission will be made up of seven people: five scientists or technologists of recognized national and international prestige, preferably in the areas of interest at CENIEH; as well as a representative of the Regional Government of Castile and Leon, and a representative of the Ministry of Economy, Industry and Competitiveness (the two latter with voice but without vote).

The National Research Center on Human Evolution (CENIEH)
CENIEH is a scientific and technical infrastructure opened to the use of the scientific and technological community, that facilitates research into the field of Human Evolution during Pliocene and Pleistocene eras, promoting awareness and transfer of knowledge to society as well as supporting collaboration with excavations at archaeological sites form these periods, both in Spain and in other parts of the world. Besides, CENIEH is also responsible for the conservation, restoration, management and record of palaeontological collections from the excavations at Atapuerca and other sites, both nationally and internationally, with similar characteristics that reach agreements with the Center.
CENIEH is the only infrastructure contained in the Map of Unique Scientific and Technical infrastructure (ICTS) in the field of Humanities.
The center was created as a Consortium between the Ministry of Economy, Industry and
Competitiveness (MINECO) and the Regional Government of Castile and Leon (JCyL), although it depends formally to the State General Administration since May 2016. The Government and Administration bodies of the Consortium are the Governing Council, the Executive Board and the Director.

Un cubil de hibernación de osos de las cavernas

El Museo de Ciencias Naturales de la Universidad de Zaragoza ha empezado un programa de videos que ha titulado "Paleontologia aragonesa a través de sus yacimientos". El primero que se ha subido essobre el yacimiento de Tella (Huesca). Se trata del yacimiento con oso cavernario más importante de Aragón que además se puede visitar. Es uno de los yacimientos que nuestro equipo ha excavado y ha estudiado en estos últimos 20 años.

De la mano de nuestros aragosaureros Raquel Rabal y José Ignacio Canudo entramos en la cueva, vemos la excavación y nos cuenta historias sobre este animal extinguido.

Saliendo del huevo al principio del Cretácico


Una comunidad de vertebrados, dominada por dinosaurios, convivía hace más de 140 millones de años en lo que hoy en día es la Rioja. Algunos de ellos pusieron huevos en la zona y sus cáscaras han sido recuperadas y descritas por nuestro equipo.

Acabamos de publicar un trabajo en la revista Spanish Journal of Paleontology presentando un nuevo yacimiento de cáscaras de huevo del Cretácico Inferior, localizado en las proximidades de la localidad riojana de Trevijano. El yacimiento, un pequeño estrato muy rico en restos de micorvertebrados, ha proporcionado cientos de fragmentos de cáscara de huevo, entre los que se han podido identificar cáscaras de huevo de dinosaurios ornitópodos parecidos a Iguanodon, terópodos de pequeño tamaño emparentados con las aves, cocodrilos, tortugas y lagartos. Este tipo de yacimientos son frecuentes en el Cretácico Inferior de la Cordillera Ibérica, pero no habían sido descritos hasta ahora en la Cuenca de Cameros.


Una de las mayores sorpresas que nos hemos llevado al estudiar este yacimiento ha sido su edad. Junto con las cáscaras de huevo hemos encontrado restos de carofitas, unas pequeñas algas carbonatadas que se utilizan con asiduidad como fósiles guía en el Cretácico continental. El análisis de las carofitas nos ha llevado a descubrir que la asociación fósil es hasta quince millones de años más antigua de lo que creíamos. Este hecho tiene implicaciones tanto para la geología local como para el registro de cáscaras de huevo de Iberia, ya que retrasa la aparición de varios grupos de cáscaras de huevo en el continente y es la primera vez que se describe un yacimiento del principio del Cretácico a este lado de los pirineos. 


Este trabajo ha podido ser realizado gracias a la ayuda de la Asociación de Amigos del Museo de Enciso (AME), que nos ayudó con la logística de la excavación, y la Sociedad Española de Paleontología, que financió la parte final de la investigación.

John W. Wells grants in Paleontology

Ayudas para la investigacion en Paleontología


The Paleontological Research Institution (PRI) invites applications from GRADUATE STUDENTS AND POST-DOCTORAL RESEARCHERS FOR THE 2017 JOHN W. WELLS GRANTS-IN-AID OF RESEARCH PROGRAM to support collections based research in any field of paleontology. The program awards grants of up
to $500 to visit PRI's collections.

This grant honors John W. Wells (1907 - 1994), past President of the
PRI Board of Trustees, a long-time geology faculty member at Cornell
University, and one of the world's leading authorities on fossil and
living corals.

PRI houses one of the largest collections of invertebrate fossils in
North America, with particular strengths in Cenozoic mollusks from the
Western Hemisphere, and marine invertebrates of the northeastern U.S.,
especially the Devonian of central New York. PRI's collection can be
searched online at www.pricollectionsdatabase.org.

Applications should include a brief (one page)description of the
research project, a budget justification and a letter of recommendation.

Hemos descritos dos nuevas formaciones geológicas con dinosaurios en Teruel

En un trabajo liderado por Marcos Aurell publicado hace unos meses describimos dos nuevas formaciones geológicas en la provincia de Teruel. Se trata de las Formaciones Galve y Aguilar de Alfambra dedicadas a estas dos localidades turolenses que es donde mejor afloran. Esta descripción a partir de un detallado trabajo de campo y de fotogeología ha permitido ordenar  y datar correctamente los sedimentos con restos de dinosaurios del tránsito Jurásico – Cretácico y de la base del Cretácico en el entorno de Galve.


El primer dinosaurio encontrado en Aragón se llama Aragosaurus y proviene de Galve (Teruel). Inicialmente se publico como perteneciente a las facies Weald, que son las rocas depositadas en medios continentales del Cretácico Inferior. Sin embargo la posición estratigráfica, es decir su antigüedad, ha sido objeto de diferentes interpretaciones desde lo que le consideraban como del final del Jurásico hasta los que lo situaban ya en el Cretácico. La diferencia es sustancial ya que varía en más de 20 millones de años…. Y es mucho tiempo.

Por esta razón el equipo de reconstrucciones paleoambientales (en el que estamos los aragosaureros) junto a otros compañeros del Departamento de Ciencias de la Tierra nos pusimos a realizar un detallado trabajo de campo de los sedimentos donde se había encontrado Aragosaurus y los que estaban por encima y por debajo. Nos recorrimos decenas de kilómetros andando y revisamos desde el aire la continuidad de las capas con ayudas de drones y fotografías aéreas. Conforme el trabajo iba avanzando tuvimos que ampliar la zona de estudio hasta la localidad de Aguilar de Alfambra. Un trabajo de muchos meses pero los resultados fueron espectaculares.

Tradicionalmente  en la zona de Galve el tránsito entre el Jurásico y el Cretácico se asignan a dos Formaciones, una llamada Villar del Arzobispo (fundamentalmente jurásica) y otra llamada Castellar (Cretácica). Lo que hemos descubierto es que en realidad hay dos formaciones más, una que hemos llamado Aguilar de Alfambra (Berriasiense) y otra por encima que hemos llamado Galve (Berriasiense superior-Hauteriviense). Es precisamente en la Formación Galve donde se encuentro Aragosaurus. Los límites entre las formaciones se colocan en discontinuidades estratigráficas, que son las que hemos encontrado para definir estas nuevas formaciones.

La Formación Aguilar de Alfambra es muy rica en icnitas (pisadas de dinosaurios) de dinosaurios y se formo en llanuras costeras de hace unos 140 millones de años. La Formación Galve está formada por depósitos formados por ríos de hace unos 120-130 millones de años donde de manera esporádica se han encontrado restos de dinosaurios saurópodos como Aragosaurus, estegosaurios y dinosaurios estegosaurios.

La edición de este año “Science and Past: Mastering Materials to know our Heritage” se centra en el uso de técnicas científicas para extraer la mayor información posible (arqueológica, histórica o para la conservación) de los materiales del patrimonio (metales, vidrio, resinas, hueso, etc.). El curso hará especial énfasis en metodologías no invasivas o micro-destructivas. Es un curso interdisciplinar dirigido a profesionales, investigadores y estudiantes de química, geología, paleontología, física, geografía, arqueología, arte, restauración y conservación, etc.

Como en ediciones anteriores, el curso será impartido por profesionales de prestigio internacional de universidades y centros de investigación europeos. Las charlas se impartirán en inglés y abordarán los siguientes temas:
- Una introducción al análisis científico de los materiales procedentes del patrimonio
- Técnicas de imagen, micro-examen y de análisis de materiales
- Técnicas analíticas para materiales orgánicos
- Caracterización de materiales y resolución de problemas en patrimonio
