Durante el mes de abril fue publicado en la prestigiosa revista PLOS ONE
un artículo sobre la primera evidencia de una colonia de anidación de
aves mesozoicas. Esta peculiar acumulación de huevos fósiles fue
encontrada en rocas asignadas al Cretácico Superior del campus de la
Universidad Nacional del Comahue, de la ciudad de Neuquén, Patagonia,
(Argentina).Las aves productoras de estos huevos fueron aves ornithothoraceas cretácicas, casi con toda seguridad Enanthiornithes de acuerdo a un estudio previo realizado por Schweitzer et al. (2002). Según el nuevo estudio, estas aves anidaban en una región árida, en una ambiente de dunas cercanas a cursos de agua efímeros. Para abordar el estudio de esta acumulación de huevos, nuestros colegas argentinos realizaron un mapeo de la “colonia” tomando cuidadosamente datos de la ubicación en el espacio de cada uno de los huevos hallados. En total, fueron colectados 65 huevos dentro de un área de 55 m2, este mapeo fue sólo un pequeño muestreo del gran área donde se encuentra esta enorme colonia.
Estos huevos fueron hallados en el sustrato de una manera muy particular, por un lado estaban en puestas individuales, y en otras ocasiones de a pares sobre un sustrato de arena. Por otro lado, de acuerdo a estudios tafonómicos, todos los huevos al parecer se encuentran en sus “nidos” originales, los mismos fueron hallados en el mismo plano de estratificación, por lo que se piensa que esta acumulación podría representar una única temporada de anidación, pero sin evidencias de estructuras de nidificación.
Otra característica importante es que los huevos del campus de la Universidad Nacional del Comahue fueron encontrados medio enterrados en posición vertical en la arena, con su extremo puntiagudo hacia abajo, una posición que habría expuesto el polo que contiene la cámara de aire lo que impediría la rotación del huevos. La rotación del huevo es una estrategia muy difundida entre las aves actuales, lo que estas aves cretácicas no podrían haber hecho. Esta posición del huevo es rara en aves actuales, hay una excepción en las aves megapodas que ponen sus huevos dentro de montículos de vegetación. Esta acumulación revela un comportamiento de anidación novedoso para las aves mesozoicas, el cual era quizá compartido con los dinosaurios troodontidos, terópodos no avianos y filogenéticamente más basales.
