La exposición de Animales extinguidos “Olvidados por Noé” se acaba de inaugurar en el Centro Cultural “Cecilio Muñoz Fillol” de Valdepeñas. Estará hasta el 13 de Enero. La muestra está organizada por el Ayuntamiento de la localidad, el Centro Superior de Investigaciones Científicas y la Fundación Española para la Ciencia y Tecnología. La exposición realiza un recorrido por los principales yacimientos peninsulares del Neógeno (periodo temporal que comprende los últimos 23 millones de años) a través de reproducciones del paisaje a gran escala y fotografías, constituye el hilo conductor de la exposición que muestra al visitante cómo era el hábitat de los mamíferos hace cerca de 20 millones de años.
El establecimiento de una eficiente dentición, sus modos de locomoción o las defensas que desarrollaron los mamíferos se muestran mediante una selección de ejemplares fósiles depositados en las colecciones del Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales en Madrid.
Indicaciones acerca de como se producen los hallazgos de los yacimientos y como se excavan posteriormente, así como un vídeo acerca de excavaciones realizadas por personal del Museo, completan la información presentada. Finalmente, se exhiben espectaculares reproducciones anatómicas tridimensionales, a tamaño natural, de algunos mamíferos, permitiendo comprobar las diferencias y semejanzas que existen entre las especies ya extinguidas y las actuales.

Estudio de las faunas frías del Pleistoceno de España
Diego Álvarez Laó, licenciado en Geología en la especialidad de paleontología por la Universidad de Oviedo acaba de defender su tesis en la que ha realizado una revisión de los macromamíferos indicadores de clima frío en el Pleistoceno de la Península Ibérica. Revisa material fósil de los 76 yacimientos en los que se han citado estas faunas frías. Muchas de estas especies están extinguidas en la actualidad, o no viven en nuestras latitudes. El tribunal presidido por el codirector de la excavación de Atapuerca, Juan Luis Arsuaga, otorgó la calificación de Sobresaliente Cum Laude. Más información en lne.es

Parece que a final de año, las instituciones norteamericanas se animan a ofertar numerosos puestos de trabajo para paleontólogos, !quién decía que la Paleontología no interesaba! Encontrado el dinosaurio ornitópodo más antiguo de España
La revista Geogaceta de la Sociedad Geológica de España acaba de publicar un artículo en su último número sobre el descubrimiento por primera vez de una vértebra caudal de un dinosaurio ornitópodo de pequeño tamaño en el Jurásico Superior de Tazones (Costa de los Dinosaurios).El trabajo está realizado por los investigadores José Ignacio Ruiz Omeñaca, Laura Piñuela y José Carlos García Ramos del Museo del Jurásico de Asturias. En el trabajo que te puedes descargar en pdf hay una descripción exhaustiva de este centro vertebral. Proviene de la Formación Lastres (Kimmeridgiense) y se encontró en el marco de las prospecciones realizadas en el Museo en los acantilados de esta parte de la costa asturiana.
Se trata de una vértebra perteneciente a un individuo juvenil de un ornitópodo de pequeño tamaño, que podría ser un hipsilofodóntido o un driosáurido. Este material representa el primer hueso de ornitópodo descrito en Asturias. Previamente se han descubierto icnitas atribuidas a ornitópodos medianos o grandes, lo que parece indicar que en la Península Ibérica había dos grupos de ornitópodos (al menos) al final del Jurásico. Además el resto descrito por Ruiz-Omeñaca y colaboradores representa la cita más antigua de pequeños ornitópodos en nuestro país.

Reconstruida tridimensionalmente una araña con Tomografía computerizada
Se ha publicado un trabajo por parte de investigadores de la Universidad de Manchester con una reconstrucción tridimensional con Tomografía Computerizada de una araña del Eoceno de la Cuenca de París. Se trata de aplicar esta técnica para estudiar organismos diminutos pudiendo reconstruir sus órganos internos. El ejemplar se trata de una araña macho llamada Cenotextricella simoni que se encontró en ámbar.Mas información en la Web de la Universidad de Manchester, donde se puede descargar la publicación gratis en pdf. También se pueden descargar las fotografías de la araña a buena resolución.
